Frequently Asked Questions

What is a dunnage bag?

A dunnage air bag is an inflatable bag that consists of a polyethylene inner liner and a kraft paper or woven polypropylene outer shell.

Why do you use a dunnage bag?

A dunnage air bag is used to stabilize and protect cargo during transportation, typically in shipping containers, trucks, or railway wagons.

How do you use a dunnage bag?

An empty dunnage air bag is placed in between cargo and subsequently filled with air until it presses the cargo against the inside of the mode of transportation.

Are kraft paper dunnage bags better than pp woven dunnage bags or vice versa?

You can not say that kraft paper airbags are per definition better than pp woven airbags or vice versa. Dunnage bags should attain certain bursting pressures in certain voids. For example: dunnage bags that are used in container transport should be inflated to a maximum pressure of 20 kPa / 0,2 bar / 2,9 PSI, and be able to withstand pressure up to 3 times this base value. That means 60 kPa / 0,6 bar / 8,7 PSI. Both kraft paper and pp woven bags when produced correctly are able to attain these values.

Which dunnage bag should I use?

The dunnage bag you should use depends on the space in between the cargo, the height of the cargo, the stability of the cargo and the placement orientation of the dunnage bag.

We can assist you in your decision process.

When should I use a Level 1 / 20 kPa dunnage bag?

You should use a 20 kPa dunnage bag when you want to secure cargo that’s transported via truck or seacontainer.

When should I use a Level 2 / 40 kPa dunnage bag?

You should use a 40 kPa dunnage bag when you want to secure cargo that’s transported in the hold of a ship.

Are there global standards for dunnage bags?

No. There are no global standards for dunnage air bags. That’s why it’s a good idea to always get in contact with an expert regarding which type of bag you should use.

What is an AAR certificate?

An AAR certificate is a document that can be obtained by passing the audit procedure of the American Association of Railroads.

Does a dunnage bag need to be AAR certified?

You are never required to use dunnage air bags that have been granted a certificate by the American Association of Railroads.

Do Safetrans dunnage bags comply with AAR standards?

Yes. Safetrans dunnage bags comply with the standards that the American Association of Railraods (AAR) sets.

However we do not possess the AAR certificate because it is only sometimes requested, never required, in the United States where railway wagons are loaded on US soil.

For every other country or region besides the United States where goods are loaded onto their mode of transport, it is never requested.
